You know what music is? God’s little reminder that there’s something else besides us in this universe; harmonic connection between all living beings, every where, even the stars.
Robin Williams, August Rush

Today we will do things a little different.
Robin M. Williams was born on July 21, 1951, and he will forever be remembered as a comedian, actor and singer. He first rose to fame as Mork from TV’s Mork and Mindy. But his fame would grow with many comedy specials, albums and movie roles.
For us here at WDED, we want to take some time to especially recognize his musical work. Depending on your age, the first thing that might come to mind is his voice actor work as the genie in Disney’s Aladdin. But much earlier than that, Robin played the title character in the musical comedy Popeye. He also played four separate voice roles in Happy Feet.
Additionally, one of Robin Williams’ most famous acting performances was as the radio host Adrian Cronauer in Good Morning, Vietnam. This is another one of those fantastic films from the 80s that brought back a lot of the classic hits of the 60s (a la Dirty Dancing).
Robin Williams left behind a copious legacy of work in his films, comedy specials and comedy albums. And today on his birthday you can probably find huge lists of these elsewhere. We wanted to put together a playlist of his best singing and musical work, interspersed with his jovial morning show antics as Cronauer. Please enjoy.
For the moment, the original Aladdin soundtrack is not available through our usual service, so we start with this video above, then turn to the rest of the playlist below.
There’s a lot of gems you can’t easily find through Spotify. Though the video quality isn’t great, check out this fantastic performance.
